Leflore County School District's state funding for the 2018-2019 school year is $1,153,880 below the amount required by state law. Statewide, the Mississippi Adequate Education Program (MAEP), which funds teachers and classrooms, is underfunded by $239,905,990.
This is the 11th consecutive year that Mississippi has underfunded its public schools. Since 2008, the last time the MAEP was fully funded, students in the Leflore County School District have been shorted a total of $12,684,476. During this same period, Mississippi raised its academic standards significantly; public schools must be provided funding that is sufficient to meet those standards.
Nationally, Mississippi ranks 25th in the rigor of our academic standards (Education Next, report published May 2018) and 47th in per pupil school spending (U.S. Census, Public Education Finances: FY 2016, published June 2018).
