The Parents' Campaign's 2014 Legislative and Policy Priorities
Resources that are adequate for success
- Adequately fund public schools through the Mississippi Adequate Education Program (MAEP)
- Base school funding on average daily enrollment (membership) rather than attendance
- Defeat measures aimed at dismantling the MAEP formula or altering it in any way that could be harmful to children
An excellent teacher in every classroom
- Increase teacher salaries to attract top-tier students into the teaching field and to prevent the loss of Mississippi teachers to neighboring states with higher salaries
- Increase requirements for entry into schools of education and for teacher licensure
Stronger standards for Mississippi schools
- Continued implementation of the Common Core State Standards
An excellent early education experience for every child
- Expansion of Mississippi Building Blocks and the Early Learning Collaborative Act to give more children access to high quality early learning programs
Broader implementation of the literacy initiative
- Expand the literacy initiative to provide reading coaches in more Mississippi schools
Stop privatization and “profitization” of public schools
- Defeat measures intended to divert state education funding to private schools (vouchers, tax credit scholarships, etc.)
- Maintain current prohibition against for-profit charter schools
